RIM Applies for More Fuel Cell Patents (May,2012)

Previously, we reported that Research In Motion had applied for a fuel cell patent. The technology would essentially allow a BlackBerry device to re-charge itself by various methods.RIM appears to be very serious about fuel cell technology, as they’ve applied for new patents. The new patent is geared towards a fuel cell within the frame of a device. While RIM may be planning for re-chargeable BlackBerry devices in the future, don’t keep your hopes up to see it being utilized in any upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices this year.via Engadget

Share Lap Times with Friends in New BBM-Connected Stopwatch Feature on BlackBerry 7 Phones (May,2012)

While out jogging today, I decided to time myself on a 3.8km route. Naturally, I used my BlackBerry 9860 as my tunes, GPS and timing machine. When I was finished, I stopped the stopwatch and noticed a neat feature when I pressed the BlackBerry menu key. We’re not sure when this new feature was added or if its very new, but the stopwatch feature now allows you to share your stopwatch time by email, BBM, FaceBook, Twitter text message and more. With each update of BlackBerry 7 OS, there have been a number of surprising features that we’ve encountered. Many apps like Twitter and FaceBook are now BBM-connected. Why not the stopwatch? This feature has been there since at least OS 7.1.0.247, but its most likely been around before that. This means you can now send your stopwatch times to your friends and family super easily, any way you want!By pressing the BlackBerry menu button after you’ve started and stopped the stopwatch, you have option to send the time and share it. This could be a great feature to have in a jogging-oriented BBM-group to keep track of times. What other uses can you think of?

How To Make Phone Calls from BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha (May,2012)

Developers just recently received the BlackBerry 10 Developer prototype if they attended the BlackBerry 10 Jam conference in Orlando, Florida. The Dev Alpha has a modified PlayBook OS, but currently has no phone or messaging functionality. Although, the resources are there, the front-end has been closed by RIM.That means, people are capable of calling the Dev Alpha, and you can hear it ring, but cannot answer. However, we’ve learned a super easy way to do so that will make you wonder how you didn’t think of it yourself. Use a Bluetooth headset! By pairing a Bluetooth headset or connecting the Dev Alpha via Bluetooth to your car, you can make and answer phone calls. So there you go developers, if you need to test incoming and outgoing calls, just connect the Dev Alpha to a Bluetooth enabled device and have at it.Thanks for the tip Nick!

Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light for BlackBerry PlayBook (May,2012)

After the release of this popular title at BlackBerry World Conference 2012, Lara Croft has made her way to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS platform with  a new installment, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. This is a third person gaming experience that contains PlayBook worthy graphics, a great  storyline and it delivers a great game play experience. Square Enix has delivered a great game for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The Guardian of Light opens up with great visual HD graphics that start to engulf you in the story as to the reason why Lara Croft has taken on this  adventure. Even the actual game play graphics are great. At the start of the first level you are given a introduction as to how to move and manipulate  Lara and her weapons, easy. As you go deeper into these ruins you are met with more difficult challenges and you make contact with these creatures.  The game doesn’t leave you on your own to figure things out, you are give reminders as to what to do in certain situations and how to get through each  level. This game also challenges your skills with puzzles before allowing you to progress further into the game.As I mentioned before, the graphics for this game are amazing. The visuals used to tell the story, and the actual game play graphics are stunning. The  developers, Square Enix have done a great job at maintaining a the graphical aspect of the game. It’s not only at the start of the game, but throughout  your game play you are introduced to cut-scenes to continue unveiling the story to you.The game controls are good, but they can be better. The only issues that I saw with the joystick style touch controller is the changing and use of  different weapons in Lara’s artillery, and always having to keep looking down to see where the jump button was. As far as navigating through the game, it couldn’t be any easier. The controller is just the righ fit for this style game. You don’t lose any visual space and yet your able to get through  each level with the easy navigation controls. Another feature is the bird’s eye view gaming style. This style let’s you take advantage of your  surrounding and is easy to see where you are going. In the end, the game play, storyline, and great HD graphics fit for a PlayBook makes this new take on the Lara Croft installment a great choice to  download on your BlackBerry PlayBook. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light can be downloaded for $3.99 from BlackBerry App World.App World purchase and Download Link: http://appworld.blackberry. com/webstore/content/105361/? lang=en

Review: BerryReader – Google Reader Client for BlackBerry (May,2012)

Most of you probably use Google Reader a lot to keep track of all those sites you read constantly (especially N4BB, right?). I work on a desk, therefore I’m always on my work computer, but some people are usually always out and rely a lot more on their BlackBerry. What do they need to keep their RSS feeds at hand? BerryReader. Bellshare’s always been known for making awesome apps, and BerryReader is no exception. With BerryReader you can access your feeds just like you would on Google Reader. You can access all items, your starred items, shared items, read by folder or single feed. You can manage your feeds right from your BlackBerry since BerryReader lets you add and remove subscriptions from your Google Reader account. On single articles, you can star, like, mark as unread or a read, and edit tags. On touch devices, you can slide to mark as unread and star, which is pretty cool and works smoothly. It’ll also let you share the feeds via email, Twitter or Facebook. If you were to lose your internet connection on your BlackBerry smartphone, that wouldn’t be a problem. You can read the downloaded feeds even if offline, and any changes you make to it will be saved on the phone to be uploaded later when you get back online. BerryReader can let you setup all updates to be done automatically in the background or just refresh when the app is opened for better battery life. It will let you set the amount of articles you want to be downloaded on every refresh. If you do decide to let it refresh in the background because you just HAVE to read the news as soon as they come out, then BerrReader notifies you when new articles are downloaded. To make it a little more customizable, BerryReader has options to make the article list view full or compact, which is almost the same except you can’t read the full article title on compact mode. There are two themes you can set, a white background/black font and a black background/white font. You can also set the font size and hide the shortcut bar. It will also let you hide the articles you already read and just show the unread ones.Best part of it all is it doesn’t show much effect on battery life. Of course, if you set it to constantly check for updates you will see a difference, but it still won’t be too much. You can try out BerryReader for free for 7 days, and purchase for only $9.99 from the N4BB store or App WorldDownload BerryReader free 7 day trial >>Buy BerryReader for $9.99 from the N4BB Store >>Buy BerryReader for $9.99 from App World >>

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha OS Reveals Upcoming Devices – Naples, Nashville, Winchester2, & More! (May,2012)

The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device has been a solid strategic move for RIM. By releasing the Dev Alpha, RIM hopes to position developers in a way that allows for the BlackBerry 10 platform to have a plentiful amount of apps and games once released. The current Dev Alpha is running on a modified PlayBook OS, although it is labeled ‘OS 10′.With any OS, fans will search through its files to see what lies beneath. Our friend J. Duke from OSBB let us know he has stumbled upon a treasure trove of goodies found within the Dev Alpha’s viewable file system. Here are some upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices found in the code:# R044 – Nevada 0x8400270A,1# R051 – Winchester2 LTE 0x0c001a06,1# R052 – Winchester2 HSPA+ 0x0d001a06,1# R053 – Winchester2 LTE HSPA+ 0x0e001a06,1# R061 – Colt 0×04002307,1# R072 – London 0×04002607,1# R073 – Blackforest 0×04002706,1# R084 – Nashville 0x8500270A,1# R085 – Naples 0x8600270A,1This information can be viewed by typing file:///radio/etc/sv.numbers in the browser on a Dev Alpha. There are a few familiar names in the list. For instance, ‘Colt’ is the codename for the Dev Alpha. ‘London’ is a second revision of the Colt. ‘Blackforest’ is said to be the mythical 10″ PlayBook. The Winchester2 is likely to be the 3G and 4G PlayBook, but don’t quote us on it. What we’re really intrigued by are the devices called ‘Naples’ and ‘Nashville’. Perhaps, they will be in the same family as the ‘Nevada’.Nonetheless, it is interesting to see this list floating in the Dev Alpha’s operating system. We now know the names and internal model numbers of devices which will run on the BlackBerry 10 OS. What kind of devices are you hoping these will be? Keep it locked to N4BB as we’re digging for more info on them all!
