App BlackBerry Joins with World Champion Surfers to Raise $260,000 for SurfAid

BlackBerry Joins with World Champion Surfers to Raise $260,000 for SurfAid blackberry-surfaidA while back ago the interwebs were stirring with a rumor that Research In Motion would be getting involved with Surfing. It wasn’t clear how, but the rumor also suggested that one of the BlackBerry 10 phones would be dubbed ‘SurfBoard’. Nevertheless, it looks like BlackBerry is involved with Surfing as they’ve just held the SurfAid Ball at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf, Sydney, which will become an annual fundraiser for SurfAid.

“I am blown away by how much money we raised at our first BlackBerry SurfAid Ball,” Lanchester said. “This will make a real difference to the people who need it most in the remote Mentawai Islands of Indonesia. A big thank you to all involved, particularly Tim Finn, The Beautiful Girls, Mark Mathews and all the pro surfers who so generously gave their time and effort on the night.”

Champion surfers who attended included the ASP women’s world champion Carissa Moore (Hawaii), four-time world champion Mark Richards, dual world champions Tom Carroll and Mick Fanning, 1999 world champion Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo, plus current ratings leader Taj Burrow, top women’s surfer Laura Enever and big wave rider Mark Mathews.

Press Release

Top Australian band The Beautiful Girls and legendary New Zealand singer Tim Finn headlined the music bill with support from DJ Goodwill and DJ Eddy.

Champion surfers who attended included the ASP women’s world champion Carissa Moore (Hawaii), four-time world champion Mark Richards, dual world champions Tom Carroll and Mick Fanning, 1999 world champion Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo, plus current ratings leader Taj Burrow, top women’s surfer Laura Enever and big wave rider Mark Mathews.

SurfAid Australia board member Charlie Lanchester, who is deputy head of Australian Equities at Perpetual, said the event sold out quickly with 530 supporters.

Current world champion Carissa Moore said it was important for surfers and people in general to give to SurfAid. “We get to travel and surf some of the most amazing places and it’s the least we can do to give back to those communities that share with us those amazing waves and their culture,” Moore said.

Mark Mathews delivered an inspiring speech on facing fear, which was a highlight of the night.

Companies supporting the BlackBerry SurfAid Ball included CBA, BT Financial, RBS, Lloyds Bank, Perpetual, Plenary, KPMG, Allen Arthur Robinson, Watpac, Richard Crookes, Davis Langdon, Billabong, Quiksilver and ksubi.

Guests included the new CEO of Perpetual, Geoff Lloyd, Head of Equities at RBS, Justin Gallagher, Head of Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch, Kevin Skelton, Head of Dealer Groups at BT Financial, Matt Englund, the CEO of Football Australia, Ben Buckley, and Billabong CEO Derek O’Neill.

The BlackBerry SurfAid Ball was held at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf, Sydney and will become an annual fundraiser for SurfAid.

BlackBerry 7 OS Awarded TÜV Certification tuvPress Release

Dusseldorf, Germany - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced that the powerful BlackBerry® 7 Operating System (OS) has been independently evaluated and awarded a security certification by TÜV Rheinland i-sec GmbH. The TÜV Rheinland i-sed GmbH certification attests that the security functionalities which are integrated into the BlackBerry 7 OS provide an effective protection of data processed in the device and that a satisfactory security level is met based on the configuration settings recommended by TÜV Rheinland.

The BlackBerry 7 OS passed the checkpoint tests for “range of security functionality”, “security functionality effectiveness against non-destructive physical access”, “security functionality effectiveness against access via user interfaces”, and “security functionality effectiveness against access via software installed on the device (apps)”. TÜV Rheinland also made suggestions for further developments such as an advanced secure wipe function for microSD cards that would complement the existing encryption capabilities available for external storage on BlackBerry smartphones.

The certification is based on tests conducted by TÜV Rheinland as well as existing certifications including “Common Criteria EAL 4+ Maintenance Report BlackBerry® Device Software 7.0.0 v1.0 and referenced documents” and “FIPS 140-2 certification No. 1669.”

“As a market leader in delivering secure, mobile solutions, RIM is committed to achieving independent, third party approvals of the BlackBerry security architecture,” said Marcus Klische, BlackBerry Security Advisor at RIM. “We view security as being fundamentally important and we are proud that the BlackBerry 7 OS has been awarded with this certification.”
