Itâs 2yrs Today that RIM Acquired QNX; Was it Worth it?
Today marks the 2nd birthday for the acquisition of QNX Software Systems by Research In Motion. The QNX operating system has been used as the foundation for the BlackBerry PlayBook. It is still evolving into what will become BlackBerry 10 and set the future stage for all BlackBerry products.
Was it worth it? You better believe it. QNX operating system is so versatile, scalable, and reliable it has been used by NASA, Ford, and many more. What else makes QNX a winning operating system is its security. Granted, the PlayBook was rooted, but only through a small loop hole, which RIM is likely working as hard as possible to patch (since the latest PlayBook OS 2.0 closed the gap). Although, QNX is hardly as susceptible as iOS or Android.
“RIM is excited about the planned acquisition of QNX Software Systems and we look forward to ongoing collaboration between Harman, QNX and RIM to further integrate and enhance the user experience between smartphones and in-vehicle audio and infotainment systems,” said Mike Lazaridis, past President and Co-CEO at RIM. “In addition to our interests in expanding the opportunities for QNX in the automotive sector and other markets, we believe the planned acquisition of QNX will also bring other value to RIM in terms of supporting certain unannounced product plans for intelligent peripherals, adding valuable intellectual property to RIM’s portfolio and providing long-term synergies for the companies based on the significant and complementary OS expertise that exists within the RIM and QNX teams today.”
QNX hasn’t been RIM’s only smart acquisition over the course of two years. We’ve seen RIM acquire The Astonishing Tribe to bring rich, 3D-like UI’s, other companies like Cellmania, Gist, tinnyHippos, Tungle.me, Jaycut, Scoreloop, and Paratek. All of these companies we’ll see play key roles in the future of BlackBerry 10 and beyond. It may have taken some time, but RIM is in it for the long haul. Keep hope alive and Be Bold.
