Opera Mini Browser 7 Released for BlackBerry (June,2012)

Opera has released a new update to the popular 3rd party browser. With Opera Mini 7 you get a few new bug fixes and a feature called Smart Page, which shows a summary of all the news from your Facebook and Twitter feeds. The Opera browser doesn’t quite score as high as the BlackBerry native browser found in OS 6+, but it does offer superior compression, which can be good for those with limited data plans. To get the new Opera Mini Browser 7 update, simply point your BlackBerry to http://m.opera.com and download.

RIM Builds Mystery Building; Could it be Project GoldenEye? (June,2012)

No, 007 isn’t working for Research In Motion. Though, if he were, the company might not be taking a beating at the moment. However, some time ago, there were whispers of a ‘project GoldenEye’. No, RIM isn’t trying to take over the world with a satellite capable of shooting a death-dealing EMP (but that’d be pretty badass if they were!).In fact, the project GoldenEye was rumored to be a big server cloud facility with military-grade specs. Nevertheless, a new mystery building resembling such rumors has finally been erected and “A number of people from varying business units are housed there,” says Rebecca Freiburger, corporate communications manager at RIM.The mystery building isn’t close to RIM’s main Waterloo campus at Phillip and Columbia streets. The new building is a three-story brick building with large windows and a glass atrium looms amid the trees of nearby Laurel Creek. The building is unmarked with any company information and is a bit secluded. Freiburger says, “It was decided a sign was unnecessary as there isn’t a need for visitors to know its location.”Although, the Colliers International’s office market report for the first quarter of 2012 gives a clue that the 7,340-square-metre building was meant to be RIM’s headquarters. John Lind, a commercial real estate agent with the local Colliers office, says “I did hear it was supposed to be an executive office or think tank, but I don’t think its use has ever been clearly defined.”What do you think this new building could be? Will the 560 Westmount building be RIM’s new headquarters, a think-tank, or the illusive server farm rumored to be called project GoldenEye?via TheRecord

Texas Company Alleges RIM Infringes on 5 Patents (June,2012)

Mobile Telecommunications Technologies, LLC, a company based in Lewisville, Texas says that Research In Motion has infringed on several of their patents. The company says they own a portfolio of former SkyTel Communications technology, and RIM infringes on five patents.Mobile Telecommunications Technologies, LLC says the patents cover several software functions including those that store and resend undelivered data messages, that handle call back numbers, and which allow a server to process extra-large emails. The BlackBerry calendar also allegedly infringes a patent that covers pre-written messages. The company seeks an injunction against RIM’s use of the technology and unspecified damages. The patents were apparently registered between 1996 and 1999, and Mobile Telecommunications Technologies, LLC claims they were pioneers in wireless communications “and [are] credited with launching the world’s first two-way wireless paging service, dubbed SkyTel 2-Way.” Of course, Mobile Telecommunications Technologies, LLC jut now wants to sue RIM after all this time.via TheStar

Facebook Will Buy BlackBerry Maker RIM to Develop Smartphone, says ex-Nokia Manager (June,2012)

According to mobile marketing expert Paul Amsellem, Facebook needs to enter the hardware business, and it will do so by taking over BlackBerry maker Research in Motion for developing its own smartphone.“Facebook is under pressure from investors and needs a long term project,” Amsellem said. “Facebook needs to do something different so that it can move away from having to deal with Apple and Google’s rules with regard to application development.”Amsellem is currently the COO of Mobile Network Group in France and was previously a general manager at Nokia, and believe that the social network is under pressure to satisfy users and investors, and believes that a smartphone is the solution.Amsellem even thinks the deal could be a win-win due to BBM and NFC. “RIM is already big with chat as it has BBM [BlackBerry Messenger] and this can work together with Facebook Chat,” Amsellem said. “A Facebook smartphone with mobile payments would definitely give NFC the kick it needs”.While buying RIM may seem like the work of pure fiction, Facebook will surely be considering its entry into the hardware game, as its current business model is unsustainable, with 82 percent of revenue coming from advertising, but almost half of its 901 million users logging in through the advert-free mobile apps each month. What would you think if Facebook purchased RIM? BlackBook anyone? Or, FaceBerry?via IBTimes

Arianna Huffington Addicted to BlackBerry, Carries 4 At All Times (June,2012)

Arianna Huffington can’t live without her BlackBerry, and apparently one just isn’t enough. In a interview with Huffington Post’s editor in chief, she admited to being addicted to BlackBerry and said “typing on the iPhone is painful”. We have to agree with her on that, there’s nothing like a BlackBerry’s QWERTY keyboard. She also said she carries not one or two, but four BlackBerry devices with her at all times. You might ask yourself, why would anyone carry 4 BlackBerrys? She has a fair point. Arianna said she travels and works a lot, so has one BlackBerry device from each carrier because sometimes one just works better than the other. That’s quite a way to stay connected!

RIM Wins Legal Suit Over BBM Trademark (June,2012)

A few months back a Canada based company by the name BBM Canada sued Research in Motion over the BBM trademark. BBM Canada has had the BBM trademark for over 60 years, making this an even harder case to win. Here’s what RIM said:“We are pleased that the Federal Court of Canada sided with RIM and confirmed that RIM’s use of BBM does not infringe the trademark rights of BBM Canada as they had alleged,” RIM spokeswoman Tenille Kennedy said. The result of this legal battle has come as great news to RIM and BlackBerry users, losing the BBM trademark would’ve had huge consequences that would’ve been hard to recover from.via Globe and Mail

Canadian Government Won’t Bailout Research In Motion (May,2012)

The Canadian Government was fast acting to save their auto industry. However, that same tax payer gratitude doesn’t appear to be extended to Research In Motion, should they ever need it. When asked, Canada’s Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is already saying ‘no’.“It has been a leading company for Canada in terms of research development and innovation, but it does need to reorganize itself, and that’s something that we expect the leaders in the company to do on their own,” Mr. Flaherty told reporters today, according to Bloomberg News.RIM is taking a beating with their stock dropping nearly 76% over the year, with a large 7% drop on the news of low quarterly results. RIM is also expected to cut some 2,000 jobs starting this week. This also comes at the news RIM has hired banks JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to weigh on ‘strategic options’, which can include a whole array of things, including a sale of the company.Despite all of the negative news, the key players at RIM are ecstatic for BlackBerry 10′s release. Their morale seems high, and RIM continues to work hard at attracting developers to the platform with the BlackBerry Jam World tour. If the Canadian Government won’t bailout its top tech company, lets hope RIM can do it themselves.via Globe&Mail

When is it Right for BlackBerry 10 to Release (May,2012)

RIM is in the news again. With a warning of an operating loss this quarter from CEO Thorsten Heins, the stock has plunged about 7% leaving the stock sitting at around 10$ per share.  With disappointing news, the already immense pressure to release a BlackBerry 10 smartphone sooner rather than later has increased.  But why?RIM has clearly stated that the first BlackBerry 10 device will be available by the end of this year. Obviously releasing the new BlackBerry 10 smartphone before the back-to-school season would have its benefits, or perhaps before Black Friday, or Christmas (the list goes on).  You’d get that extra boost in sales depending on the time.  However, I don’t believe a moderate increase in short-term sales has a significant effect on the long-term success of BlackBerry 10 and RIM itselfIf RIM launches early in the fall, such as August, they may benefit from the back-to-school sales period.  However, if the product is marketed poorly, or the operating system is unfinished, the situation would probably become pretty dire for RIM regardless of the early launch.  Without changing the perception of the BlackBerry brand, or launching a solid product, the launch date is a moot point. If RIM launches BlackBerry 10 later this year, such as in November, it will be more likely that the product will be finished.  Although, the sales opportunity from the back-to-school period will be lost, they can still benefit from the Black Friday/Cyber Monday and Christmas sales, which are associated with higher volumes.Even considering the potential release of the next iPhone, at this moment the perception of BlackBerry has been so tarnished in North America that I doubt the launch timing relative to the iPhone would even matter.  The general consensus among consumers is that the iPhone and Android platforms are superior.  In order to compete, RIM has to convince consumers that this new breed of BlackBerry smartphones is not only good, but better than the competition.  On top of that, RIM has to deliver a solid smartphone experience that competes with established and mature platforms with much more apps.Despite the gloomy news, it’s tough to go out of business with 2.1 billion dollars in the bank.  It’s not as if RIM has to release this device soon so they can avoid getting shut down.  BlackBerry 10 will be released regardless.  I feel the main reason why many claim that an earlier launch is better is their desire to satisfy their own doubts about the future of RIM.  In times like these, differentiating public pressure to perform from the ability to perform is difficult.  As long as RIM keeps its word and launches BlackBerry 10 this year, I believe the real question is the ability of RIM’s marketing and software development to achieve success despite such strong opposition.

RIM Starts ‘Don’t Just Think. Do.’ BlackBerry Marketing in Australia (May,2012)

Following on the ‘Wake Up’ marketing campaign in Australia, Research In Motion is continuing the Bold marketing. Some new banner ads have started to pop-up, which read ‘Don’t Just Think. Do.’It’s a pretty cut and dry banner, but it does show a small BlackBerry logo and a website address of WakeUpBeBold.com. Upon visiting the website you’re greeted with an Australian man telling you how to be the best businessman or woman. Check it out for yourself and see if it pumps you up to Be Bold. Thanks Georg!

RIM Thought About Going Private; Here’s Why That Might Be Good (May,2012)

Before Thorsten Heins took the reigns from Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, the two RIM co-CEOs apparently discussed with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners last year about going private. However, talks of the matter ended when they couldn’t agree on RIM’s valuation.According to Bloomberg, there were only “preliminary discussions” but due to the “disagreement over valuation” the talks didn’t go anywhere. If RIM could reach an agreeable valuation, going private could be a good thing.Investors in private companies may or may not hold a liquid investment. Covenants can specify exit dates, making it challenging to sell the investment, or private investors may easily find a buyer for their portion of the equity stake in the company. Being private frees up management’s time and effort to concentrate on running and growing a business, as there are no SOX regulations to comply with. Thus, the senior leadership team can focus more on improving the business’s competitive positioning in the marketplace. This is essential, as RIM has garnered a bad rap for lack of focus and time-management.A take-private transaction could be an attractive and viable alternative. As long as debt levels are reasonable and RIM continues to maintain or grow its free cash flow, operating and running a private company frees up management’s time and energy from compliance requirements and short-term earnings management and may provide long-term benefits to the company and its shareholders.Do you think RIM should go private? Or, do you think they should sell-out and dwindle away from the ‘big 3′ spot? Vote on their sale in our poll here, and comment below on your thoughts about RIM going private.

Poll: Should RIM Sell Itself Before Releasing BlackBerry 10? (May,2012)

Research In Motion has got themselves in a bind. BlackBerry 7 smartphone and PlayBook sales were terrible. As a result, RIM is sitting on a bunch of inventory, an estimated $1 Billion worth. With their shares dropping to nearly single digits, RIM has been weighing the options available to them. One likelihood is the sale of all or parts of the company. Their hardware division is tanking and really only have QNX left to stand on. Should RIM look to sell itself and recoup some of the losses or bite the bullet and hope BlackBerry 10 is a win? Vote in the poll and comment with your thoughts.Take Our Poll

What to Make of RIM Having $1 Billion of Unsold BlackBerrys & Hiring Bankers for ‘Strategic Options’ (May,2012)

Research In Motion issued a press release regarding the news that the company was sitting on $1 Billion worth of unsold BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBooks. RIM’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, said, “The on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace, and we expect our Q1 results to reflect this, and likely result in an operating loss for the quarter.”Additionally, RIM announced that they’ve hired J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to “assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance. These advisors have been tasked to help us with the strategic review we referenced on our year-end financial results conference call and to evaluate the relative merits and feasibility of various financial strategies, including opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.”The key part to what Heins mentions in RIM’s engagement with J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets, is “partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.” For quite awhile now we’ve heard rumors of Samsung looking to license the BlackBerry 10 operating system. Sammy is getting sick of Android’s fragmentation and even more, fretting over Google’s intimate relationship with Motorola. Thus, it could be a win-win for RIM to license BB10 to Samsung. At this point, with RIM’s shares trading in the single digits, any largely revenue generating opportunity could be an option.RIM is losing money in the hardware sector. While our poll shows BlackBerry users want RIM to keep making their own hardware, it might soon become a thing of the past. Jefferies analyst, Peter Misek, has calculated in a note to clients that after assigning operating costs and including inventory charges, the hardware division likely spent 4% more than it took in. Could this mean we might see RIM one day be solely a software company? It is still a bit early to tell, but the signs are beginning to show. Nonetheless, as we’ve pointed out, RIM has made some substantial acquisitions. Perhaps it is only a matter of time until RIM can play all of their cards. RIM will be reporting results for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 on June 28, 2012 after the close of the market. The Company will discuss today’s announcement and first quarter fiscal 2013 results on aconference call and live webcast beginning at 5 pm ET, June 28, 2012. The call can be accessed by dialing 1-800-814-4859 or at www.rim.com/investors/events/index.shtml.

Research In Motion CEO Provides Business Update (May,2012)

Press ReleaseWATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – May 29, 2012) - Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today provided a business update from Thorsten Heins, the Company’s President and CEO.“During the Q4 2012 and fiscal year-end financial results conference call on March 29, I said that I would provide our shareholders with candid and timely updates when possible on the progress and challenges RIM is experiencing. While we are no longer giving quantitative financial guidance, I wanted to provide a brief business update at this time, and will provide more details when our Q1 financial results for the quarter ended June 2, 2012 are released on June 28.In terms of challenges, as I mentioned on the March financial results conference call, RIM is going through a significant transformation as we move towards the BlackBerry 10 launch, and our financial performance will continue to be challenging for the next few quarters. The on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace, and we expect our Q1 results to reflect this, and likely result in an operating loss for the quarter. We are continuing to be aggressive as we compete for our customers’ business – both enterprise and consumer – around the world, and our teams are working hard to provide cost-competitive, feature-rich solutions to our global customer base. On the positive side, we expect to further increase our cash position in Q1 from the approximately $2.1 billion we had at the end of fiscal 2012.Despite the current challenges, we have made significant progress on a number of fronts in the past few months:Our annual BlackBerry World conference and BlackBerry 10 Jam took place earlier this month and both were tremendously successful. More than 5,000 developers, partners, carriers and enterprise customers from 115 different countries saw the first glimpses of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 platform and their response was encouraging. Our developer partners have been enthusiastic with the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha prototype unit we distributed at BlackBerry World and many are well underway in developing applications to be ready for the launch of BlackBerry 10 in the latter part of calendar 2012.The support and enthusiasm from our developer community is also reflected in our app growth, where we now feature more than 80,000 apps, which represents a 220% increase from one year ago, and more than 15,000 apps for PlayBook compared to less than 2,000 last year. We believe this bodes well for our ecosystem as we get set to launch BlackBerry 10.We are making steady progress with the innovation of our next-generation BlackBerry 10 mobile computing platform, which is still on track to launch in the latter part of calendar 2012.Our global subscriber base continued to grow this quarter to approximately 78 million, driven primarily by growth in international markets, which is partially offset by high churn in the United States, and our BBM user base has grown to approximately 59 million users globally. Our strong brand internationally was recently enhanced with the successful launch of two new BlackBerry 7 phones in India and Latin America. We continue to make strategic changes to RIM’s senior management team with the hiring of two key new members to RIM’s executive leadership team. Kristian Tear, our Chief Operating Officer, whose background also includes extensive experience in international sales in Europe, Asia and Latin America, and Frank Boulben, our Chief Marketing Officer, who will provide our team with deep experience in the mobile computing and communications industry. Both will assist me and the existing executive team as we continue to make the organizational changes necessary to position RIM for the future and prepare for the launch of our new BlackBerry 10 platform. The CORE (cost optimization and resource efficiency) program we told you about previously is focused on delivering key operational savings through various initiatives. The financial objectives for the CORE program are targeted to drive $1 billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013, based on our Q4 run rate. We are targeting better efficiency and use of resources in our sales and marketing initiatives to effectively leverage marketing windows and evaluate our country portfolio to determine where it makes sense for us to prioritize our efforts. We will also continue to review RIM’s organizational structure and clearly define accountabilities for all key businesses and business processes with a goal of eliminating fragmentation, duplication and inefficiencies. While there will be significant spending reductions and headcount reductions in some areas throughout the remainder of the fiscal year, we will continue to spend and hire in key areas such as those associated with the launch of BlackBerry 10, and those tied to the growth of our application developer community. We will share more details regarding our progress throughout the year as programs are implemented or changes are completed. To further enhance our commitment to successfully completing our transformation, after the release of our year-end financial results, we engaged J.P. Morgan Securities LLC and RBC Capital Markets to assist the Company and our Board of Directors in reviewing RIM’s business and financial performance. These advisors have been tasked to help us with the strategic review we referenced on our year-end financial results conference call and to evaluate the relative merits and feasibility of various financial strategies, including opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.Although we are facing challenges, we remain excited about BlackBerry 10 and believe that this platform coupled with the results of the strategic review will create long-term value for our stakeholders. We will provide another more detailed business update when we report our first quarter results in June.”Q1 Results Conference Call DetailsRIM will be reporting results for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 on June 28, 2012 after the close of the market. The Company will discuss today’s announcement and first quarter fiscal 2013 results on a conference call and live webcast beginning at 5 pm ET, June 28, 2012. The call can be accessed by dialing 1-800-814-4859 or at www.rim.com/investors/events/index.shtml. BlackBerry, The Rebirth Part 3: Acquisitions In Motion (May,2012)

Looking at RIM, one can’t help but point out the number of companies that its has acquired over the last two years. Companies such as QNX , The Astonishing Tribe (TAT), NewBay, Jaycut, Scoreloop, Tungle, tinyHippos, Gist, DataViz, Cellmania, Paratek Microwave inc., just to name a few. Did the Waterloo war room realize that BBOS was so outdated that a massive overhaul was needed? Perhaps they realized that QNX alone wouldn’t be sufficient alone in building their war chest? Let’s look at why some of these acquisitions puts RIM in a solid position:The QNX platform allows RIM to provide real-time multitasking. That is something we don’t see with the competition. Developing for the QNX platform is quite easy and it erases nearly all the BlackBerry OS limitations. QNX technology is the foundation for the worlds highest capacity router, which handles data, voice and video traffic for millions of Internet users every day. QNX is very well integrated with the automobile industry, which RIM is beginning to have a huge presence. They have partnered with companies like Cisco, Delphi, General Electric, Siemens and Thales. QNX is considered a very stable system and that’s why most 911 emergency units are powered with QNX software. This is the company that is powering RIM’s BlackBerry10 software. Let that sink in.RIM didn’t stop there. You now have an extremely powerful operating system, but you need to dress it up, right? Thats where the innovative UI geniuses from Sweden come into play. We are talking about The Astonishing Tribe, of course. What’s cool about these guys is the fact they now call themselves “The BlackBerry Tribe”. The TAT group has been around for 10 years and we’ve already seen some of their work on the PlayBook with the Scrapbook app. Thorsten Heins showed off the new UI at BlackBerry World 2012, which you can see demoed here.BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is what BlackBerry is currently all about. We know it’s the main reason BlackBerry has managed to stay relevant to consumers.  How do you perfect that? By adding Scoreloop to BBM!  With BlackBerry10 you will be able to play against your BBM contacts. A lot more will be shown off at the newly renamed “BlackBerry Jam Americas” as we get closer to release. Those are some notable mentions on just a few of the new companies RIM has acquired and the potential services they will bring to the Platform. What do you think? Does BlackBerry have the foundation it needs to succeed in the future?  Do you believe the “acquisition” strategy RIM has chosen is a valid one? Sound off in the comments and stay tuned for our last part of the series where we concentrate on the future of RIM and some of the grim possibilities.

Apple Board member and J. Crew CEO, Mickey Drexler, has been filmed in a new CNBC documentary. What has caught some users to their surprise is Drexler’s use of a BlackBerry Bold 9900 instead of an Apple iPhone. You can see the Bold 9900 at around 21 seconds in the video.Drexler has been a member of Apple’s board since 1999, though appears to prefer his Blackberry device. Goes to show not everyone prefers the iPhone, even those directly associated with Apple’s business. Though, it is unclear if Drexler was also wearing J. Crew during the video (should he have been?). via WebProNews
