BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Photos Surface!(April,2012)

On the cusp of BlackBerry World and BB10 Jam about to start, images of the BlackBerry Dev Alpha have surfaced. This device was codename the ‘BlackBerry Colt’, but there is uncertainty if the Dev Alpha device to be given to developers at BB10 Jam will be the original Colt, or if it is the ‘London’.As we’ve heard many rumors before, the Colt certainly does look like a ‘Mini-PlayBook’. Whatever this version may be, it is definitely an attractive looking device. We’ll be live in Orlando tomorrow and getting to kick off the conventions. Keep it locked to N4BB as we’ll soon go hands-on with this device!Discuss the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha in the forumsvia CB

Original Google Phone Looked Like a BlackBerry(April,2012)

You may have been following the current Google vs Oracle court saga. Nonetheless, some very interesting information has been coming from the court room, like how Oracle wanted to buy RIM. Google was forced to reveal renders of its original Google phone prototype from 2006. Evidently, the mock-up Google phone looks strikingly similar to a BlackBerry, which was the leading device of that year.It makes perfect sense why Google wanted to copy the best, and here are some of its iffy specs:“Exact specs for those first concepts aren’t detailed, but Google does spell out what it had in mind for the least common denominator across Android devices. An ARMv9 processor of at least 200MHz, GSM (3G preferred), 64MB of RAM and ROM, miniSD (yes, mini, not micro) external storage, a 2-megapixel camera with a dedicated shutter button, USB support, Bluetooth 1.2, and a QVGA display with at least 16-bit color support.”Although, Google ended up never releasing this prototype. Instead, they went on the release the T-Mobile G1 in fall of 2008. What do you think Google Android devices would be like today if they had first released resembling a BlackBerry?via Gizmodo

But when will a BlackBerry 10 device release? RIM’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, has stated we’ll see a BlackBerry 10 device by “later half of 2012″.One of our sources has revealed to us that RIM intends to announce the first BlackBerry 10 device by mid-August. The first BlackBerry 10 device will be touch only and we’re told has a projected market release for first half of October. As expected, RIM plans to pump a lot of marketing dollars into BlackBerry 10. The early release shows this as the first BlackBerry 10 device will release slightly after the back-to-school and just before the Holiday markets. We’re also told the first BlackBerry 10 device with physical QWERTY keyboard is planned for an expected Q1 2013 release. Although, we’re unsure if this will be the BlackBerry 10 slider we’ve been hearing about. Nonetheless, we’re excited to hear that the first BlackBerry 10 device is pegged for an earlier than thought release! How do you feel about the first BlackBerry 10 device being touch-only? The ‘BlackBerry Project’ Analyzes Over 500,000 Texts Per Month(April,2012)

Marion Underwood, a University of Texas at Dallas professor, has been collecting texts sent by and to 175 adolescent students at a large suburban Texas high school as part of a study dubbed the BlackBerry Project.Students who participate receive free BlackBerrys from Underwood’s team, as well as a data plan that includes unlimited texting and a limited number of voice minutes. The students then agree to allow Underwood’s research team to record all the texts and emails they send and receive from the phone, which they agree to use as their primary communication device. The amount of text message the professor and her team have collected is incredible. Over homecoming weekend of 2009, Underwood’s team took in 43,305 texts over a two-day period. Underwood says her team, on average, adds 500,000 new text messages per month.Although the students are aware Underwood and her team are analyzing the texts, emails, and phone calls, the students aren’t entirely self-censoring their conversations. In an early look at the data, Underwood found that 7% of the texts contain profane language, and that 6.6% of messages contained sexual language, which is similar to what other researchers found when analyzing conversations in teenage chat rooms. In one instance, a friend texted one participant about selling drugs, the participant wrote back, “Hey, be careful, the BlackBerry people are watching, don’t worry, they won’t tell anyone.” Underwood respects the privacy of all participants, but does have her team monitoring for words like “rape,” “kill myself” or “older man.”Thus far, Underwood’s data suggests that girls and boys text about the same, but that boys are less likely to reveal just how much they do. Underwood is hoping that the data collected in the last four years could be useful to psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists, but it is unclear whether Underwood will ever be able to share this data with others.via LA Times

Review: BlackBerry Torch 9850/60 Fishbone Case(April,2012)

When I got my Torch 9850 the first thing that came to mind was “I need a case for it”. I’m actually not a fan of cases or covers, I think phones look way better without them but the thought of getting scratches or dents on it kills me. I always keep my phone protected so I thought, since I already dislike the idea of using a case, why not get one that would look almost as cool as it looks without it?The Fishbone Case for BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 is a two part case. The first is a black, silicone skin and the second is a rubberized plastic fishbone back, which comes in different colors. What I really love about this case is how the silicone doesn’t feel loose thanks to the plastic fishbone back, which helps it stabilize the case and keep it in place. While the case feels a little big, I can’t deny it looks pretty cool and the two layer case means double the protection, there is no way my phone is getting is getting any dents now, ha!The case is very easy to apply and, once you do, it feels like it’s part of the phone. You can get the Fishbone case in black, black and white or black and purple for only $14.99. Head over to the N4BB store (SHOP4BB) and get it! Check out more photos below.Buy this same case in the N4BB store for only $14.99 >>

Google Drive Compatible with Files & Folders for BlackBerry PlayBook(April,2012)

Today, Google announced ‘Drive’, their latest Google product, which looks to compete against Dropbox. Google Drive is a cloud storage service, which initially gives you 5GB of free space. The creators behind the popular Files & Folders app for BlackBerry PlayBook let us know that Google Drive is compatible with their app! With Google Drive, you can:Create and collaborate. Google Docs is built right into Google Drive, so you can work with others in real time on documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Once you choose to share content with others, you can add and reply to comments on anything (PDF, image, video file, etc.) and receive notifications when other people comment on shared items.Store everything safely and access it anywhere (especially while on the go). All your stuff is just… there. You can access your stuff from anywhereâ€"on the web, in your home, at the office, while running errands and from all of your devices. You can install Drive on your Mac or PC and can download the Drive app to your Android phone or tablet. We’re also working hard on a Drive app for your iOS devices. And regardless of platform, blind users can access Drive with a screen reader.Search everything. Search by keyword and filter by file type, owner and more. Drive can even recognize text in scanned documents using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. Let’s say you upload a scanned image of an old newspaper clipping. You can search for a word from the text of the actual article. We also use image recognition so that if you drag and drop photos from your Grand Canyon trip into Drive, you can later search for [grand canyon] and photos of its gorges should pop up. This technology is still in its early stages, and we expect it to get better over time. You can get started with 5GB of storage for freeâ€"that’s enough to store the high-res photos of your trip to the Mt. Everest, scanned copies of your grandparents’ love letters or a career’s worth of business proposals, and still have space for the novel you’re working on. You can choose to upgrade to 25GB for $2.49/month, 100GB for $4.99/month or even 1TB for $49.99/month. When you upgrade to a paid account, your Gmail account storage will also expand to 25GB.Once you’re all signed up to Google Drive, check out Files & Folders for the BlackBerry PlayBook…you never know how long it will take Google to bring a Drive app to the PlayBook (if ever).Get Files & Folders for BlackBerry PlayBook in App World

RIM to Announce Strategic BlackBerry Partnership Tomorrow(April,2012)

We’re hearing from multiple sources that Research In Motion plans to announce its first strategic BlackBerry partnership tomorrow. RIM employees have been notified they will be briefed internally tomorrow, but likely after a public announcement. If the rumors hold weight, who could RIM be partnering with?So far we’ve been hearing three top contenders: Apple, Google, and Facebook. Although, we’re not sure why exactly, it is just mere speculation going around RIM employees in Waterloo. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the announcement is regarding any sale or lease for parts of RIM.We previously reported that RIM had hired bankers to “weigh strategic options”. Additionally, it has also been rumored many times that there are some tech companies who have been interested in purchasing RIM. Business Insider has compiled a list of 11 companies they feel could be interested in purchasing RIM:Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola (Google), or Nokia: All of these smartphone makers are struggling for dominance in a fragmented market with low profit margins. In markets with low profit margins, especially “platform” markets like smartphones, market-share is a competitive advantage. All of these companies might look at RIM’s meaningful but dwindling share of the global smartphone market and conclude that it made sense to own.Microsoft: Microsoft is about to throw a Hail Mary pass in the mobile market in the form of the new Windows Phone 7. Microsoft is nowhere in mobile. Owning RIM would not give Microsoft a commanding position in the market, by any means, but it would put it somewhere in the market. Also, RIM is strong in the enterprise, which is where Microsoft is strong. The combination of Microsoft and RIM might be able to argue persuasively that they’re a better choice for corporations than Apple or Android.Facebook. Go ahead and laugh. Facebook’s working on its own Facebook phone. It needs this because Apple and Google currently control the gateways with which hundreds of millions (soon to be billions) of Internet users will access Facebook. Facebook is also about to have a market capitalization of ~$100 billion. Facebook might conclude that RIM’s expertise and distribution would be nice things to own.Amazon.  Amazon already makes its own tabletâ€"the Kindle Fire. Lots of people think Amazon will soon make its own smartphones. Amazon doesn’t care about building the state-of-the-art tablets. It just wants to make affordable tablets and smartphones aimed at the mass consumer market, gadgets that consumers can use to buy stuff from Amazon. Like any other acquirer, Amazon might want to blow up RIM’s proprietary platform and replace it with Android or Windows, but RIM’s gadget expertise and distribution expertise might be helpful.Dell, HP, Acer, and other PC manufacturers who are getting absolutely clobbered because they’re not making hit smartphones and tablets. All of these companies might view RIM as a way of leap-frogging into these businesses.Intel. Intel has announced that it is going to make smartphones (in fact, it has already made some). Intel has pots and pots of cash and is hunting around for things to spend it on. We thinkIntel would be nuts to go into the making-smartphones-and-tablets business, but Intel apparently doesn’t think so. So Intel might also buy RIM.Who do you think RIM will be partnering with? Is the BlackBerry PlayBook Really a Failure?(April,2012)

In my ongoing battle of putting things into context and making reasonable points in the world of BlackBerry, the issue of the BlackBerry PlayBook consistently being deemed a failure in the media or dud came to my attention.   Why would it be a failure?  Well, if you compared the sales of the PlayBook to the sales of the iPad, the PlayBook gets smoked.  No question.  The iPad is an economic beast in the tablet world.  Second, RIM’s probably not making much money on the PlayBook at $199-$299.  For all I know,at those discounts they could be just breaking even or losing money on each one sold.   As a standalone product, it probably is a dud. This looks like bad news for RIM, and it is.  There are many people that are saying that RIM should have focused on their smartphones instead of the PlayBook.  They could be right, but what if there’s more to the story?  It’s naïve to think that RIM’s sole priority was to make lots of money from the PlayBook.  Of course RIM needs to make money as a company, but RIM knows that the smartphone sales make up the majority of their hardware revenue.  And they want to ensure they sell their future smartphones, which will all be running the BlackBerry 10 operating system.  By releasing the PlayBook beforehand, RIM gave BlackBerry 10 smartphones a head start as a burgeoning ecosystem.  In other words, the PlayBook took one for the team.Apps are hip, cool and pretty much a synonym for being “ahead of the curve”.  In the media’s eyes, if there’s an app for something, then it’s pioneering the new technology revolution no matter how good or popular the app is.  Despite many apps being less than useful, they do sell devices.  And when it comes to selling on the basis of apps, having more apps is an obvious way to do it.  Mobile platforms have tried to rectify their app shortage in different ways.   You can go the Microsoft way and throw bags of money at developers.  Or you can launch a tablet and build the developer tools, subscriber base, and iron out all the kinks before you release a smartphone.  Time will tell which method works best.Imagine if the new BlackBerry 10 phone was released later this year with even 10% of the apps the PlayBook currently has.  I’d bet the reviews would unanimously chant “no apps=dead on arrival”.  And it would mostly likely be true.  It certainly wouldn’t be a success in the media and the ecosystem’s reputation would suffer, leading to fewer developers willing to create apps for BlackBerry 10.What about other tablets besides the iPad though?  I’m sure even most Android tablets sold less than the PlayBook and those manufacturers had all the apps!  Of course, some tablets like the Galaxy tab sold more.  In that case though, these manufacturers do not have much influence over the software development, and do not gain anything from a premature software release. From a marketing perspective, it’s also harder to link the potential success of the subsequent BlackBerry 10 phone to the poor sales of the PlayBook because they are two different types of products.  The BlackBerry 10 smartphone still has a chance at generating some significant momentum without being dismissed as another failure.  The new smartphone can be marketed as something completely new, free from much of the baggage the tech media might throw at it.I would say the decision to create a QNX-based tablet before a smartphone has other advantages.  I would guess that most people would download more apps and games on their tablet then their smartphone.  Why?  Well, a larger screen does make many games much more enjoyable to play, possibly creating a higher demand for tablet games over smartphone games.  This means more developers would be interesting in creating a tablet game over a smartphone game.  Most tablets also don’t have a cellular connection, leaving them unable to text, email and call on the go natively.  This means that tablets are less useful without the necessary apps to support them.  Also, if you look at any poll, I’m sure you’ll see that the most common uses for smartphones are still typically texting, email and calling.  Tablets are more app-centric than smartphones.  Despite being a small fraction of the smartphone market, the tablet market may be poised to grow faster.   If you believe these hand-waving arguments, then you can see why making a tablet to kick-start third-party app development on the ecosystem might be a good strategy. This is sort of a joke in the BlackBerry community (and it’s mostly true), but with the half a million or more PlayBook tablets in consumers hands, RIM now has a sizeable group of unknowing beta testers of the new BlackBerry 10 operating system’s foundations.  The stability, spellcheck, notifications, battery life optimization, email, hardware-accelerated graphics and security of the BlackBerry 10 operating system were all developed and improved using the PlayBook’s release.  RIM now has the basics taken care of for BlackBerry 10 and is now better able to not only provide a new product of decent quality, but also one with a more predictable launch date.Of course, by mid-2011, RIM realized the PlayBook was not selling as well as it had hoped.  I believe RIM decided to shift their strategy and heavily discount the PlayBook to sacrifice the short term sales for future subscriber base and market share potential.  RIM has further pushed this strategy by creating a special prototype device for developers at BlackBerry Jam in May.Instead of hitting the market quickly and prematurely, RIM has decided to be patient and execute decisively.  RIM is now taking some short-term pain for long-term gain.  Whether it pays off is another story.  I believe that RIM made big mistakes earlier on with the media’s perception of the PlayBook, but not necessarily with its quality.  The customer reviews of the device are generally positive despite the largely negative initial reviews.I’m saying the PlayBook shouldn’t be all about dethroning the iPad, even though RIM probably thought it was initially.  RIM then saw the writing on the wall.  The PlayBook may have been a financial failure for the company, but it is still entirely possible that it lays the groundwork for a success in software innovation and sales for the future BlackBerry 10 phones.  RIM is willing to lose the battle in order to have a chance to win the war.  To me, it’s a refreshing and clear break from RIM’s historically conservative strategies.  If the BlackBerry 10 platform fails to catch on, then the BlackBerry PlayBook can truly be deemed a failure.Unfortunately for RIM, BlackBerry 10 will be at the expense of a few hundred million dollars and the poor PlayBook sales.  But we all know the transition to a new platform is tough, and I’m even guessing that BlackBerry 10 phone won’t sell that much.  But the important part is that they continue to mature and develop the platform, and grow year-after-year sales much like the iPhone had to do.  The sacrifice the PlayBook has made towards increasing RIM’s chances of a future in the smartphone industry might pay off, and that could be just what RIM needs to tip the scale. Thanks for reading.  We’d love to know what you think in the comments below!

Why I love My BlackBerry – Share Your Daily Usage Stories and Win!(April,2012)

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me on another one of my so called fanboy rants. I’ve been told plenty of times that I am very biased towards my Bold 9900 and to be honest it’s probably true.  I happen to always be on the move either traveling or working and my device must be able to be productive and entertaining.  Today, while I sit at work on a very long break, I picked up my 9900 and fired away a few emails, listened to a little music, and even browsed a few YouTube videos.  I want to hear how you guys use your favorite BlackBerry device on a daily basis. The first 10  responses will receive a free N4BB sticker!  As for me.. This is how my day goes with my trusty 9900:As soon as I wake up, I check my emails and BBM’s. Right away I will check today’s weather on BeWeather and proceed to dress accordingly. You never want be under dressed or over dressed right?!  By the time I am ready to leave the house I fire up some BBM music and off I go. Being a “dramatic” BlackBerry fanatic, I constantly check my Bloomberg app to see what RIM stock is trading at. Usually the result is me firing expletives at the wall and pulling my hair out with some of the ridiculous articles! Of course to calm me down, I usually turn to my eBay app where I monitor items I have for sale. Or, look for items I might need to purchase. Electronics and usually new Devices seem to always make me happy. I use eBay a lot and this app is one of my favorites!During my free time I will fire some BBM’s or engage in conversation in the BB Juice group (shout out to the best group of BB loyalists). As for entertainment, I do play some NEED FOR SPEED or browse Annoying Orange videos on YouTube with my little nephew Ricardo. Sometimes I’ll play a little Angry Pigs (still love this game) or a little Solitaire.  What I love the most are the conversations I have with those of you on Twitter. You can follow me @NikoG21.  I am always available for a good BlackBerry conversation or to provide any help I can! That’s enough about me. Tell me how you use your BlackBerry everyday and win some awesome N4BB stickers!P.S. Don’t Forget to keep it locked to N4BB for live updates and breaking news from BlackBerry World and BlackBerry Jam 10 Conferences in May!

BlackBerry 10 Will Allow You to Seamlessly Run Apps Within Apps(April,2012)

If you’re planning to attend the BlackBerry 10 Jam conference coming up soon, you may want to check out a sessions titled ‘BlackBerry 10 Flow and the Invocation Framework’. In this session, RIM will show how developers will be able to seamlessly run apps within apps. The description of the session is as follows:The Invocation Framework in the BlackBerry® 10 platform is designed to allow one app to integrate with another, while also keeping the flow absolutely seamless and natural to the user. See how you can invoke an app with your content and carry out an action while also including an embeddable view of another app inside yours. Join us to see why sharing content and performing tasks with another app has never been this easy or powerful.”Essentially, you’ll be able to open embedded content (say a webpage) from within your app. Therefore, keeping your app’s user in one place without them ever having to exit your app. This could be great for apps that need to popup maps, leaderboards, etc. The session ID is DEV117, which will be on Wednesday at 4:45pm EST. You can view all other sessions here. Thanks Dave!

BBM Music 1.2.0.17 Now Available in BlackBerry App World(April,2012)

Initially we saw RIM release BBM Music 1.2 in Beta Zone some time ago. The new version now available in BlackBerry App World is a little jump up, with many of the same features found in the Beta Zone release. Here’s what’s new in version 1.2:Invitation Requests

Discovering similar musical tastes just got easier! When an invitation request is sent from a ‘friend of a friend’ through Recent Updates you will now be able to view songs and the common friend before accepting/declining an invitation.‘Favorite’ Songs and Contacts
You can now highlight songs or contacts as favorites in BBM Music 1.2! To favorite a song, you need to click on the star displayed in the top left hand corner while listening to a specific song. When the star is highlighted yellow, this will indicate the song as a “favorite” and you will now be able to access this song through “favorite songs” on your profile tab. Favorite songs will be displayed to your friends in Recent UpdatesFor a favorite contact, when you visit a contact’s page you can select “favorite” from the top menu bar. This will add a highlighted yellow star beside the contact’s name in the contacts tab which will only be visible to you. You will now have the ability to search by “favorite” contacts within the contacts tab.

Intelligent ShuffleIntelligent shuffle offers you the ability to shuffle songs by favorite songs, genre, artist, song popularity, album, contact, release year or recently added. To access the intelligent shuffle, on the home tab click “shuffle” which will display the shuffle menu shown below.A Default Friend for all New UsersNew users to BBM Music will now have a default friend listed as a contact.

RIM Announces Wireless Achievement Award Finalists(April,2012)

RIM announced today the finalists for its annual Wireless Achievement Awards, which demonstrate what can be done when organizations and their partners put BlackBerry solutions to work. The finalists have found ways to help increase performance, simplified life for their employees and customers, among other things. Here’s a comment from one of the finalists:“Without the BlackBerry Enterpriser Server we would not have been able to take our concept and make it into the quality application that it is today. Our highly secure BlackBerry solution helps our legal team provide better service to our clients, which is why we exist.” â€" Matthew Williams, Outsource Application Manager, Eversheds LLPYou can read more about the finalists here and the winners will be announced at BlackBerry World.

Research In Motion Set to Choose Financial Adviser(April,2012)

We all know that times are hard for RIM at the moment.  The company started the search for a financial advisor to help with any strategic options that may present themselves.  According to Bloomberg the front runner is JPmorgan Chase & Co. It seems a little strange to me that RIM would choose a company that has publicly stated that RIM should be split. Read the article below and sound off in the comments.April 19 (Bloomberg) — Research In Motion Ltd. is near a decision to pick a financial adviser, and JPMorgan Chase & Co. is the leading candidate to help the company weigh strategy options, two people with knowledge of the matter said.A final choice hasn’t been made and could come within days, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because the matter is private.RIM Chief Executive Officer Thorsten Heins, who took over from company co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie in January, said he’s considering strategy changes after customer and market-share losses led to five straight quarters of sales shortfalls.Tenille Kennedy, a spokeswoman for Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, declined to comment, citing a policy not to discuss rumor or speculation. Jennifer Zuccarelli, a spokeswoman for New York- based JPMorgan, also declined to comment.RIM would prefer to license its BlackBerry mobile operating system, a person with knowledge of the matter said earlier this week. The company is racing to put the final touches on a new platform, known as BB10, and release the first smartphone built on the software later this year. After a licensing deal, RIM’s next choice would be to find a strategic investor, the person said.German-born Heins, who joined RIM in 2007, said in March that while the company would consider a sale, that wasn’t “the main direction” he’s pursuing.RIM slipped 1.6 percent to $13.20 yesterday in New York
